Teenager appeared in court yesterday after he was charged with cultivating cannabis with intent to supply.

Hundreds of cannabis plants worth more than £80,000 were found during two police raids in Atherstone.

The drugs were discovered at two separate addresses, both of which came as a result of tip-offs from members of the public.

The biggest seizure came when officers forced the front door of a house in Innage Terrace and found hundreds of plants, with a potential value of £80,000, along with growing equipment worth thousands.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested and charged with cultivating cannabis with intent to supply and appeared in court on Saturday.

He was bailed and was due to appear back in court on Monday.

The second raid happened in Cooks Close after people reported suspicious activity.

No-one was at the address when officers arrived, but several mature plants and a hydroponics set-up were found.

Both raids happened on Friday, July 2.

Pc Christopher Bell, of Atherstone’s Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “This is a successful day for police in North Warwickshire, with plants with a potential value of almost £100,000 being seized and that is money prevented from being used to fund further criminality.

“Whilst the first discovery was fortunate, it came from information supplied by a concerned member of the public, as did the information we received to support our warrant application for the other.

“We urge the public to report suspicious activity to the police.

“We take all reports seriously and they will be looked at by the relevant departments.

“We are aware that social media is a forum where people report suspicious incidents to other residents to prevent crime.

“Whilst this is commended, the police need to be made aware, as we are consistently being told of third hand information from Facebook that has not been reported to police.

“Our team’s work in taking these drugs off the streets of Atherstone, shows that we listen to the public, so please report your concerns directly to us.”
