A north Florida grower has won the state’s first approval to process and dispense medical marijuana to the limited number of patients who qualify under existing rules.

Hackney Nursery, doing business as Trulieve, received notice Wednesday it may process its harvested product at a facility in Quincy, and must begin dispensing to qualified patients within 210 days. The company said it would likely begin sales of prepared cannabis at its Tallahassee dispensary in the coming days.

“(W)e are most excited to get this much anticipated medicine to the patients of Florida,” said Trulieve’s CEO, Kim Rivers, in a statement. “The Department of Health staff and leadership have been consummate professionals throughout this entire process.”

Trulieve is one of six companies the state has authorized to cultivate, process and eventually dispense medical cannabis.

Regulators must formally approve key steps in the production and distribution process before the companies may proceed. Another company, Surterra Therapeutics, was first to get the OK to harvest.
